How Altered Brain Wave States Can Help You Reprogram the Subconscious
I believe we can all more or less relate with the feeling of being stuck into something, a pattern, a situation, even a life we feel no longer fits us. Today I wanna tell you about a process that started years ago which led me to first discover and then keep applying sound to one of the most difficult things there is: changing ourselves.
Changing is not compulsory. Even though it's pretty trendy nowadays to talk about how beautiful changing is, I believe it should somehow be driven, at least partially, by a genuine wish. There is a huge difference between feeling forced to mutate because of some external happenings that compel us to shift against our will and acknowledging we actually wish to change, in order to feel and live better. As a neuroscience and behavioral science geek, if there's one thing I learned is that changing after a certain age, for our brain, isn't that welcome. Our brain learns as many things as possible with an incredible openness for the first few years of life to then, later on, try to repeat the patterns. That doesn't mean we can't add some new things here and there but, big changes (whether in practical or conceptual form) are harder to achieve.
I faced this fundamental biological truth much sooner than performing the change I wanna talk you about today. Though, as it happens, I was starting to realize that the life I had always dreamed of (making a living with music) was hindered by some root beliefs. I wasn't completely aware of how many they were and how they acted, but I had a hint there was something rowing in the opposite direction of my journey. What to do then?
I won't lie, I felt lost for a while. I was absolutely clear about what my dream life was, though my very true pillars had been creating a different reality and way of thinking. And to make it even clearer to you, I'm mostly speaking about the entrepreneurial mentality. Let me give you a complete framework.
By growing up in a middle-class family, I never experienced lack of money, although I can't really say I was born in a rich family. I just never experienced poverty. However, the mindset "better save money in case there will be a problem one day" defined my reluctancy to investment much deeper that I was aware. My dad, who always handled all finances, is a quite conservative person, whose money management is pretty simple: work hard during the day, save money, spend it from time to time if needed. He definitely praised and preached saving over spending. To him, saving was bringing him joy. And I must say he beautifully and genuinely embodies his beliefs. He's a very humble person, not particularly moved by great ambitions but rather by an idea of a peaceful and balanced life.
Now, when it comes to try to build something as an entrepreneur, the employee mindset doesn't quite help. For one simple reason: fear and risk handling. The entrepreneurs must develop a way to go past their fears (because they're afraid as well, just like any other human being) and find a way DESPITE the risk and the uncertainty. By being born and raised in a conservative country, region and family, I can definitely tell you I did NOT dispose of this chip pre-installed in my motherboard. I needed to rewrite my core and rewire my system.
It happened by chance when, by studying and expanding my knowledge randomly as I always liked to do, I stumbled upon the whole realm of brainwaves, altered state of consciousness and how you can't expect to change your life on the surface until your subconscious mind is changing. The ratio between conscious and subconscious mind is 5% to 95%, whereas the latter represents how much of our life is determined by something out of our conscious reach. Besides feeling naturally spellbound by this idea and possibility, I had no hesitation in wanting to test it on myself. I was so in need of a change to make my dream happen that I would have done anything I could.
As it happens, the rest is (my) history. I won't take through my last 7/8 years step by step: all I want to point out is that I was able to use, dispose and even lose most of my life savings from a mindful and purposeful perspective. Years ago, it would have driven me mad to see the number on my bank account going down, even a little. The feeling of losing control, the anxiety that'd overtake me by seeing that would have made it impossible to invest in a project, even if that project was the one I loved the most.
In about eight years, by daily bringing my brainwaves in alpha and theta mode, I have been able to rewrite many of my core programs, getting me wherever I had always dreamed about and distancing from my own limitations. I set up my own routine, practices and exercises to speak the subconscious language, which is way different than the one coming out of our mouth. It's a language of vibrations, feelings and state of beings. A much deeper and powerful one, if you will.
As of today, after experimenting so much and studying the matter way more extensively, I can attest with no doubt that sound can help rewire our thoughts beautifully. I think that, frequently, the life we want is made impossible by our thoughts and beliefs, the real thoughts that lie deep down the surface, the ones we don't know we have. These transcend our rational grasp and shouldn't be "understood". Today, I'm passionate about spreading this word out because I can't help but think how many people shall never live the life they dream of just because their motherboard is programmed differently. The key takeaway is that YOU CAN CHANGE. We are not condemned to die with the same thoughts and patterns we acquired in our first years of our lives. There's nothing glorious in giving up any attempt to make your dreams happen just because you think it's impossible to shift your reality. It is very possible.
Getting to the end of this article, I leave you with some basic information about the different brainwaves states. If you want to get your brain in these states, look for "binaural beats" on Spotify or YouTube, make sure you listen to them with earbuds and get to "speak" with your different states of consciousness. To rewire your subconscious mind, you should get your brainwaves in Theta or Alpha state.
DELTA: from 0,5 Hz to 4Hz. This is the slowest brainwave state, associated with deep sleep and unconscious healing. In Delta, the body restores itself, regenerates cells, and strengthens the immune system. It’s essential for physical recovery.
THETA: from 4 Hz to 8 Hz. A deeply meditative state linked to creativity, intuition, and emotional healing. Theta is where we access the subconscious mind, making it ideal for inner work, visualizations, and reprogramming limiting beliefs. Very important to process the events of the day.
ALPHA: from 8 Hz to 14 Hz. The calm, alert state often experienced during light meditation or flow. Alpha helps with focus, creativity, and stress reduction. It bridges the conscious and subconscious, making it great for learning and inspired action.
BETA: from 14 Hz to 38 Hz. This is our normal waking state, associated with thinking, problem-solving, and active concentration. It’s necessary for engaging with the world, but too much Beta can lead to stress and anxiety.
GAMMA: from 38 Hz to 80 Hz.The fastest brainwaves, linked to higher consciousness, deep insight, and peak cognitive performance. Gamma is active during moments of intense focus, compassion, and expanded awareness.
